Changes introduced by the Charities Act 2006

The Charities Act 2006 aimed to reduce 'red tape' for charities, making it easier for you to:

  • change your charity's rules for calling meetings, making decisions or other parts of your charity's administration
  • transfer your charity's property
  • change your charity's purposes
  • spend your charity's capital
  • pay trustees for certain services or goods they provide to the charity

You can find out more about the Charities Act 2006 in the plain-language guide produced by the Office of the Third Sector (now the Office for Civil Society).

Most of the changes the Charities Act 2006 introduced have been put in place. However, provisions made for Charitable Incorporated Organisations (CIOs), exempt and excepted charities are still being implemented.
