How do we change our charity's name?

As a trustee you and the other trustees manage and administer the affairs of your charity. There may be occasions when you have to change your charity’s name and the procedure to follow should be set out in your charity’s governing document.

You can search the register of charities to find out if there are other charities with similar names.

We may refuse to change your name where it is likely to mislead the public, has the same as that of another charity or likely to cause offence.

When you are ready to proceed you can use our guide which takes you through the options relevant to your circumstances and explains what you need to do.

Keeping charity details up to date By law, you have to tell us about changes to your charity’s contact and other details.
