Which governing document is right for my charity?

You must have a governing document in place before you apply to register your charity. A governing document is the rule book for your charity, setting out:

  • what your charity is set up to do
  • how it should be run
  • who should run it
  • how it will make changes to the way it is run

You can decide which type of governing document is best for you from our guidance:

If your charity is part of a national or umbrella group (eg a branch of PTA-UK), you may be able to use an approved governing document.

Approved governing documents contain standard aims and administrative procedures specific to your type of charity.
