Themes and lessons learnt from our compliance work

Publishing the outcomes and wider lessons from our compliance work, is an important way of encouraging trustees to ensure they comply with their legal obligations and of helping them to protect their charities against abuse.

We put great emphasis on preventive work, seeking to clarify legal requirements and to help spread and build good practice in collaboration and partnership with the sector. We do this by:

  • raising awareness of risks facing charities and publicising alerts and warnings;
  • widely promoting compliance guidance and good practice advice through compliance outreach work and communications
  • consulting and collaborating with the sector on developing compliance policy and guidance;
  • publishing a Compliance Toolkit for trustees: Protecting Charities from Harm
  • signposting to other sources of information, advice and guidance provided by sector groups, government agencies or other organisations
  • publishing reports of our investigations, both the results of our statutory inquiries and, where it is in the public interest, regulatory compliance cases
Charities Back on Track

The Commission's annual report Charities Back on Track is aimed at raising awareness among charity trustees to help them avoid the problems that have led other charities into serious difficulties. It contains real case studies of investigations that the Commission has undertaken in the last financial year. It also includes some detail of other types of Commission regulatory casework of a less serious nature but that nevertheless cause problems in charities. In addition the report provides basic statistical information on our casework and performance.
