Please note that the Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) is not yet available for charities to use. We hope that charities will be able to start using the CIO from Spring 2012, subject to Parliament approving the regulations which complete the legal framework for CIOs. If you are an NHS charity (defined) the online application system does not apply to you: please read Registering NHS charities for guidance on how to proceed.
Our user-friendly system provides you with online guidance throughout completion of the form. Once you have completed the first six screens, depending on your type of governing document, you will receive an application reference number. When you have received this number you can save the form at any time and come back to it another time if you wish. Below is an example showing where you will see your application reference number on the On Line Application.

Before you apply to register a new charity, you must read our Public benefit guidance. This will explain how your application should demonstrate that your organisation's aims are charitable for the public benefit. It cannot have some aims which are charitable and others which are not. Our Guidance on charitable purposes sets out which aims ('purposes') are considered to be charitable and why.
