The Regulator for Charities in England and Wales
Charity Review Visits were established by the Commission in 2002 and were an important means of promoting effective governance in charities, with the information gathered contributing to policy development, and to our publications. Around 2,500 Review Visits were conducted between April 2002 and November 2007. In November 2007, as part of the Commission's programme of restructuring and reprioritising following the implementation of the Charities Act 2006 and the reduced funding settlement for the period 2008-2011, the decision was taken to terminate the programme of review visits.
Many valuable lessons were learnt through the programme of charity review visits, which have been put into practice in developing a new approach to monitoring. The significant contribution of the programme was reflected by the consistently excellent customer feedback from the charities visited. Following the closure of the programme, the Commission has published an analysis of almost 1000 visits conducted, which presents some key governance messages for the sector.
