There is no restriction on the use of names or the use of non-English words in the names of charities. Generally staff should apply the same criteria in assessing their acceptability for the purposes of s.6 of the 1993 Act as for English names. |
| |
We should not therefore accept any non-English name without first being provided with a translation into English. |
| |
As well as a check for any other similar or identical names on the Register the English version will need to be checked against the criteria covering the use of ss.6(2) (b)-(e). In other words we will need to check whether it is in some way misleading or misdescriptive or offensive. |
| |
We will also need to ensure that we apply the same tests where a non-English word or name looks like an English word or name. |
| |
If there is any doubt or difficulty with the translation provided by an organisation use of current access to translation services may be considered. Please refer to Policy Division for further information. |
